Just as he did during his Idol run, Lambert takes every song to unexpected vocal heights. But what's most striking about FYE is that it doesn't sound like a post-Idol debut album. After a single listen, it's clear who Lambert is as an artist. Just imagine the inevitable tour (and watch Sunday's American Music Awards for a preview).

It's also -- Out magazine editor be damned -- brimming with a true gay sensibility.

"I was born with glitter on my face/My baby clothes made of leather and lace," Lambert purrs over the thrusting electro vibe of Sure Fire Winners. "All the girl s in the club wanna know, where did all their pretty boys go?"

Calls to the dance floor come fierce and frequent. The first single and title track is a sexy, outer-space blast of clubby goodness; and If I Had You is another declaration of innate Adam-ness. ("So I got my boots on, got the right amount of leather, and I'm doin' me up with a black color liner.")

Lambert co-wrote four of the disc's tracks but relies mostly on a buzzy stable of heavyweights to power his engine. Standout Fever boasts a Lady Gaga co-write and a pulsing, anthemic beat that grabs you by the belt buckle and doesn't let go. And Justin Hawkins of the Darkness contributes the flat-out fantastic Music Again, which boasts brash choruses worthy of a Def Leppard tune. ("You make me wanna listen to music again!") It's '80s, campy and more rock-n-roll than anything buzzing around radio.

There are lyrics by Pink, Linda Perry, Weezer's Rivers Cuomo, Muse's Matthew Bellamy andIdol judge Kara DioGuardi, whose Strut is an exercise in flash and sass. There's even a gorgeous, goth-ish piano ballad, Soaked, that could have come from a Tim Burton musical. But Lambert never seems overwhelmed. His sky-high vocals even make the disc's more straightforward tracks (Aftermath, Broken Open) come alive.

Skip tacked-on closing track Time For Miracles, Lambert's 2012 soundtrack contribution. But give the guy some credit. Only Lambert could make a disaster-movie anthem seem ordinary.
